Upon preparing for a multi-week trip abroad, the subject tries to clear the refrigerator of all perishable items.

Warning: Sometimes perishable food has already perished, despite being stored in a refrigerator.

Start with a pan.

Spray with PAM, for health benefits.

Take eight slightly expired eggs (approximately 1 month expired - see note at end of post)

Put in pan.

Rummage around the fridge, pull out first thing you find - in this case - baby portabellas.

The next steps are really hazy, but when the subject regained consciousness, copious amounts of broccoli and beans were in the pan too!

This doesn't explain how the food all turned red. Well, in the green tupperware, there was already a small slice of lasagna and between the dump onto the plate and mircrowaving, it all mixed together creating what you see above.

More on expired eggs, from our resident food expert:

"This is from the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service website which is the most respectable sounding website I could find.

"What Does It Mean When an Egg Floats in Water? An egg can float in water when its air cell has enlarged sufficiently to keep it buoyant. This means the egg is old, but it may be perfectly safe to use. Crack the egg into a bowl and examine it for an off-odor or unusual appearance before deciding to use or discard it. A spoiled egg will have an unpleasant odor when you break open the shell, either when raw or cooked. "

Another website I looked at explained it further, saying that the moisture evaporates over time and is replaced by air which made sense, I think. Too bad there is no more ClampFix Focus Room, would have been a fact of the day."

Have you eaten something recently that you shouldn't have? The subject will be out for approximately 3 weeks and we need some guest posts!

  1. Cheese with mold from the cafeteria... it was a few months ago and made my stomach flip flop. I don't think it was on any of the pieces I ate, but I saw it midway through the fuzzy snack. GROSS!

  2. According to MSN, it's sometimes ok to eat food that's gone bad... key word: sometimes.
